RACISM ON BOOKTOK | Is Reading Political?!
Is reading political?
For those of you scouring for the answer...it's YES.
Conversation sparked within the Booktok community this past year of whether politics belong in the reading space. Now, this conversation has been around for quite some time. However, readers came fed up when the book ban was announced.
This list included some favorites that were clearly targeted towards certain communities. It became evident what side certain readers were on when they decided to keep quiet about these situations as they came up in the past year.
These "silent" readers took to their pages with the hashtag #readingisNOTpolitical. Saying that the reading space is strictly to have fun and escape.
Other readers rebutted this by arguing that these "silent" readers' favorite books feature politics themselves. They also can't help but notice that these readers all fail to read diversely.
"I just can't relate to the characters."
The ongoing debate about whether politics belong in the reader space.
The answer is one hundred percent yes. Whether you like it or not..some of our favorite stories feature politics, politics of the crown, racism or prejudice in some shape or form. Yes, you should be reading diversely. It's more than reading a book about black or marginalized characters. It's about supporting the people in the those communities that create these stories.
