Reasons Why You Might Have Writer's Block
My writer’s block lasted about 3 months. Yes, you read that right.
It was March. I was feeling good about my newest project, and I had planned out so well. However, April came and I lost all interest in writing that book. Of course, I was bummed out because I thought the story was a good one.
The book was about a family curse of adultery brought on by a witch that doubled as a siren(you can see the book cover for it on my Pinterest). I still have the story on my laptop, but it won’t be seeing the light of day. Sorry, not sorry.
You would think that it’d be easier to write now that we have all this time, but the writing process has become even harder.
I’m going to suggest to you four different reasons why you might have writer’s block. The only way to fix a problem is to find the root of it.
Let’s get into it!
You did not plan enough.
Are you a planner, pantser, or plantser? That is what you need to figure out before diving into the writing process. The brainstorming stage needs to be done first! You cannot skip over it. Even if you categorize yourself as a pantser, you need to have some idea of where you want your story to go. You can’t go into a battle without some kind of strategy.
Your mind is not clear.
What’s been on your mind lately? I know it’s hard to forget about what’s happening in the world around us. I’m not asking you to forget, but you do need to find a way to destress. If you feel bad, then that is going to show in your writing.
It’s important to find your chill. Not only for your writing, but for your mental health as well.
Your environment.
Grl, where are you working? This goes without saying, you need to establish a writing space. Whether it be an office, the dining room table, or your patio. Just make sure that this space is a nice and peaceful place for you to work.
I have four siblings, so you can imagine it’s hard to find a truly quiet space to work. However, if I tell them when I’m about to write, they usually respect that time for me. I love those babies!
Your Story Idea Wasn’t Meant to be Written
I hate to break it to you, but not all ideas are book worthy. Shocker, right? I learned this the hard way with my witch project. Ten thousand words in and realized that the story wasn’t for me. It wasn’t something that I would write (it felt wrong because i’m a christian).
Some questions to ask yourself: Can this story be written in detail? Is it a short story? Is it novel worthy? Is it a screenplay?
I write screenplays too. Hehe.
These are just some things to think about when you feel yourself getting stuck. You can take them and do what you want with them. I just wanted to share with ya’ll some of the things that I realized were causing my writer’s block.
As always, thank you for reading! Don’t forget to come back for more blog posts.
